Alpina Firmware Preservation

From MS4X Wiki
Revision as of 13:21, 23 March 2024 by Sda2 (talk | contribs) (→‎Downloads)

Alpina firmware and calibration files often get hoarded and replacement control units are way more expensive than their BMW counterparts.

That encouraged us to create this preservation area with some additional information on the different engines and gearboxes.

We will also include WinKFP flash manual if the files are available within SP-Daten.

E36

For the E36 chassis Alpina was very ambitious and basically created two different cars. Three version came with an inline-6 engine, and two version had the big V8 equipped.

Alpina B6 2.8

The E36 325i based Alpina B8 2.8 uses a stroked M50 engine (engine code E1) and a ZF 5HP18 automatic transmission if ordered with switchtronic.

Engine Control Unit

The 2.8L E36 Alpina B8 uses a M3.3.1 from Bosch for engine control (Alpina # 13 56 667).

Transmission Control Unit

The Alpina B6 2.8 used a coventional ZF 5 speed automatic gearbox 5HP18 without the steptronic option.

Alpina B3 3.0

The E36 325i based Alpina B3 3.0 uses a stroked M50 engine (engine code E3) and a ZF 5HP18 automatic transmission if ordered with switchtronic.

Engine Control Unit

We are still looking for a genuine Alpina readout of the Bosch Motronic. Feel free to contact us if you have this file.

Transmission Control Unit

The original Bosch GS7.11 used in the BMW E36 was modified by Alpina to support switchtronic buttons and have faster gear shifts (Alpina # 24 10 101).

The TCU has an AMD AM27C256 memory (DIP-28) that is UV erasable, you can simply write attached file to any other GS7.11 after clearing the memory under UV light.

Alpina B3 3.2

The E36 328i based Alpina B3 3.2 uses a stroked S52 engine (engine code E4) and a ZF 5HP18 automatic transmission if ordered with switchtronic.

Engine Control Unit

The 3.2L E36 Alpina B3 uses an MS41.1 from Siemens for control of E4 engine (Alpina # 13 56 683 for LHD or Alpina # 13 56 687 for RHD).

Transmission Control Unit

The original Bosch GS8.36 used in the BMW E36 paired with a 5HP18 was modified by Alpina to support switchtronic buttons and have faster gear shifts (Alpina # 24 10 101).

Alpina B10 V8

Engine Control Unit

The M62 engine line up was paired with three different DMEs from BMW already, and so Alpina didn't bother to change that for their F4 engines.

The F3 engine was based off an M62 without VANOS and devided into Bosch M5.2 (Alpina # 13 56 686) and M5.2.1 (Alpina # 13 56 692)

The newer F4 engine got drive-by-wire and a fully variable intake VANOS. It used a Bosch ME 7.2 (Alpina #13 56 691).

Alpina B10 V8S

The Alpina B10 V8S only came with the 4.8L V8 engine that was otherwise only used for the legendary Alpina Roadster V8 (BMW Z8). These cars always came with an automatic ZF 5HP gearbox.

Engine Control Unit

The F4 4.8L was based off an M62TU and was controlled by the Bosch ME7.2 (Alpina # 13 57 654).

E46

Alpina B3 3.3

The E46 based Alpina B3 came in several configurations.

The engine was always based on the S52 engine with an increased stroke to 3.3L (engine codes E4-4 and E4-6) and a ZF 5HP19 automatic transmission.

Engine Control Unit

From March 1999 to June 2000 the early Alpina B3s were equipped with the Siemens MS42 engine control unit (Alpina # 13 56 696) and the rest of car was based on a 328i (E4-4).

Later B3s came with the Siemens MS43 ECU (Alpina # 13 57 650) and vehicles were based on a 330i (E4-6).

Transmission Control Unit

Alpina used the BMW GS8.60.x control units in the B3 paired with a modified ZF 5HP19 and a stronger torque converter than the BMW base models.

Early models with MS42 used the GS8.60.0 (Alpina # 24 10 620) and later model B3s used the GS8.60.4 (Alpina # 24 10 631).

Alpina B3S 3.4

The Alpina B3S, like the B3, has its engine based on the S52 engine but comes with a higher displacement of 3.4L (engine code E5/1) and a ZF 5HP19 automatic transmission.

Engine Control Unit

All B3Ss came with the Siemens MS43 engine control unit (Alpina # 13 57 653 for LHD or 13 57 656 for RHD) and vehicles were based on a 330i.

Transmission Control Unit

Alpina used the BMW GS8.60.4 control unit (Alpina # 24 10 644) paired with a modified ZF 5HP19 and a stronger torque converter than the BMW base models.

Alpina B7

Engine Control Unit

The Alpina B7, like the B5, has its V8 engine based on the N62 4.4L version but comes with a lower compression and an additional ASA supercharger. The engine code is H1 for pre-LCI and H2 for LCI models. It always came with a ZF 6HP26 6 speed automatic transmission.

Like the BMW N62 engines, the H1 and H2 engines from Alpina used the Bosch Motronic ME9.2.1 with a special software version that was capable of driving the boost control flap and had additional boost sensor and dual exhaust gas tempereture inputs. The part numbers differed for China/England/Korea (Alpina # 13 57 660) or the rest of the world (Alpina # 13 57 658).

Transmission Control Unit

The TCU became part of the complete transmission and mechatronics unit with the 6HP from ZF, so it is no longer a seperate control module.

Alpina used it's own version of the N62 6HP26 and also its own calibration. There are two version available, one for the pre-LCI (Alpina # 24 10 652) and one for the LCI version (Alpina # 24 10 660).

Compared to other chassis, where the Alpina gearbox tune is a great upgrade, on the E6x platform this will reduce your redline to 6100rpm due to the characteristics of the engine and have the car drive off in 2nd gear except for manual mode. Manual mode will replace the usual Sport/Manual mode. Shifts are quicker though.

However it is possible to flash that software with WinKFP and an up to date SP-Daten.

Alpina Roadster S

The Alpina Roadster S houses the same 3.4L S52 based engine as the E46 B3S (engine code E5/2). It only available with a manual gearbox.

Engine Control Unit

All Alpina Roadster Ss came with the Siemens MS43 engine control unit (Alpina # 13 57 659) and vehicles were based on a Z4 3.0i.

The use of the MS43 in a E8x chassis was exclusive for Alpina and Siemens even had to create a completely new firmware for that.
